Budding artists and writers of all ages are being urged to enter a unique competition to have their design displayed on a local tunnel to commemorate the heritage of Rushden.

East Northamptonshire Council, in partnership with Nenescape and Heritage Lottery, are asking local residents to design the Washbrook Road tunnel mural by creating an image which showcases the history and heritage of Rushden or writing a poem or quote less than 50 words about what makes the town a great place to live and work. Pictures and poems will be used in the tunnel, carved onto benches and added to interpretation panels to enrich this route. A variety of designs and words will be hand-picked at the end of February and will be painted by local graffiti artists in the spring.

The ‘Out to Water, Into History’ project is being delivered by East Northamptonshire Council in partnership with Nenescape and funded by Heritage Lottery, to enhance the stretch of the East Northamptonshire Greenway from Rushden Lakes to Asda in the heart of Rushden. The five-year project will aim to improve this section of the Greenway by providing a clear link that will create a green corridor. Nenescape’s wider work celebrates and looks after the heritage and nature of the Nene Valley.

Work is underway to clear the path and cut back the trees to make the route more accessible and volunteers will be carrying out a second litter-pick to ensure the area is rubbish free for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, Cllr Steven North, said, “‘Out to Water, Into History’ is a fantastic project which will enhance the green spaces surrounding Rushden and create a route for residents and visitors to enjoy.

“The competition provides the local community with a unique opportunity to have their design displayed at the Washbrook Road tunnel for future generations to enjoy for many years to come. We look forward to seeing what creative designs local residents come up with.”
