Last night (Sat 23rd Feb) Fire Services has to be called to Bassford Recreational Ground in Raunds after one of the large swings was set on fire.
Matthew Jackson told us via the Raunds Town Voice Facebook Group:
” Some charming individuals decided to set the Bassford recreational grounds swing on fire. Fire service arrived as I left (was on the way somewhere but stopped to call them to ensure it was dealt with). One less piece of play equipment in the town. “
Matthew went on to say:
“Its a plastic swing yet it was melting from the heat of the fire. Whoever did it clearly had a little knowledge of how to use accelerants and make sure it went up in flames. “
A video was posted by Sam McCann showing the extent of the fire
The fire was put out by fire services and the swing has been disconnected and taken away to allow children to play on the remaining equipment today.
In November last year alone it cost the Council (Taxpayer) over £1100 to repair the skate park at nearby Amos Lawrence Park following act of vandalism. It is unknown at this time whether the swing will be replaced and what the cost will have been from this malicious act.
