More than 8,900 secondary school places have been allocated to pupils across Northamptonshire today – over 450 more than last year.

It represents an 11.5% increase in the number of families applying for a secondary school place this year compared with 2017.

Despite the increase in applications, the proportion of families securing a place at their first preference school has risen to 77.3% from 76.5% in 2018, while the number of families being offered a place at one of their preferred schools is 94%.

Families who applied for their secondary school place online and within the deadline are able to check their offer on the council’s website today at

Cllr Fiona Baker, county council cabinet member for children’s services, families and education, said:

“This year we have seen the highest ever number of applications for a secondary school place in Northamptonshire – an increase of over 11% over the past two years.

“Notwithstanding the significant increase in applications, I’m pleased that we have been able to offer more families (94%) a place at one of their preferred schools.

“Meanwhile, we continue to work hard to create additional school places across Northamptonshire to meet the demand caused by our growing population, through building new schools and expanding existing sites across the county.”

Any parent has the right to appeal (through the independent appeals process) against refusal of a place at any school for which they have applied.

The next round of secondary school place allocations (for late applicants) will take place in April.

Primary school allocations will be announced on April 16th.
